Слайд 8History
Many hundreds of years ago, a people called the Celts lived in Europe and

on the British Isles. The Celts believed (верить) that the souls of the dead (души умерших) visited Earth on the last day of October. They had a festival in honor (в честь) of these souls of the dead, and they called it Samhain.

Слайд 10
People once believed that there were many ghosts and witches on

the Earth and that they met on 31, October to worship(поклоняться) the devil.

Слайд 11Today, people do not believe in ghosts and witches but they

like to tell stories about them on Halloween.

Слайд 12Traditions
The main (главная) Halloween activity for children is trick-or-treating.

Слайд 13Children dress in costumes and masks and go from door to

door saying "trick or treat".

Слайд 14Trick-o treat! Trick-o treat! Give us something good to eat! Give us candy,

give us cake, Give us something sweet to take! Give us cookies, fruit and gum, Harry up and give us some! We have better do it quick Or we'll surely play a trick! Trick-o treat! Trick-o treat! Give us something good to eat!

Слайд 15The most popular costumes are of witches, skeletons, black cats, ghosts

and other.

Слайд 17
The neighbours give children such treats as candy, fruit and money.

So that children do not play tricks on them.

Слайд 18
If you don’t give candy to a trick-or-treater…

Слайд 19This could happen to you!

Слайд 20The Jack-O-Lantern
The Irish used to carry turnips with candles in them

to light their way at night and to scare away (отпугивать) ghosts..

Слайд 21An Irish legend says that Jack-O'-Lanterns are named after the man

called Jack. He could not enter heaven (рай) because he was a miser (скряга), and he could not enter hell (ад) because he had played jokes (шутки) on devil. As a result, Jack has to walk on the earth with his lantern until Judgment Day (Судный День- конец света).

Слайд 23When they arrived in America they found that pumpkins were both

plentiful (многочисленны) and easier to carve (вырезать) than turnips.

Слайд 24Now, Jack-O-Lanterns are used for decorating people’s homes.

Слайд 25At Halloween parties children play traditional games. Many games date back

to the harvest ( плодовые)festivals of very ancient (древние) times.

Слайд 26One of the most popular is called bobbing (нырять) for apples.

One child at a time has to get apples from a tub (ванна) of water without using hands. But how to do this? By sinking his or her face into the water and biting (кусание) the apple!
