Secondary education is compulsory in our country. It is free and it is financed by the state. At school children study mathematics, geography, history, biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, foreign languages and other subjects. They study there till 16 or 17 years of age. When finishing a secondary school pupils take a number of exams in native language, mathematics and some other subjects to receive Certificate of Secondary Education.
Having finished secondary school pupils may go to vocational schools, technical schools or enter any institute or university.
Vocational schools train future workers for plants and factories.
Technical schools give wider knowledge and skills in different subjects and train specialists (technicians, bookkeepers, secretaries, librarians, etc.) for different kinds of enterprises.
Both for pupils and for students the school (academic) year begins on the 1 st of September. This day called the Day of Knowledge. Pupils have holidays in autumn, winter, spring and two or three months holidays in summer. Students usually have two terms and take their exams in winter and in summer. After five years of studies they receive their diplomas and if someone feels that he has a special talent to some sciences he may take a post – graduate course.
