river Adige. Verona’s population is about 259 thousand people. The climate in this part of Italy is very soft, the average July temperature is above 24°C, and the average January temperature is about 1°C and there are no chilling winds. St. Zinon is considered the protector of the city, the cityday is on the 21 of May. Verona is the city of Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare immortalized families Capulet and Montague, who actually lived here. But the city is famous not only by these names. Verona is famous for its cultural and historical sights, which are important business centers and venues of exhibitions and festivals now. For example the famous opera festival Arena di Verona or exhibition of wines.

only after founding of Roman colonies there in 89 BC the city began to blossom. From the small and unknown settlements Romans made a masterpiece of art with great buildings, monuments, some of which have remained today. In the third century BC, city used as a military base against the barbarians. Later Verona was expanded and strengthened by Galley. Since that time, the city had been used as a fortress for several centuries.
During the Second World War, Verona was damaged by bombs. After the fall of Fascism, Verona became the center of the process against high-ranking Nazis.

Слайд 5Verona is famous with presence of walls in a good state

of preservation, which were built at different times: • ruins of the walls of the Roman Empire (the third century). There are ancient city gates - the Porta Borsari and Porta Leoni; • Verona preserved walls of the thirteenth century from the bridge to Aleardi, leading to the main city square - Piazza Bra; • on the St Peter's hill there are the walls, built by the family of Scala (13 century), with more than fifteen towers; • walls, built by the Venetians in the 16 century; • the walls and ramparts, built by the Austrians in the 19 century, remained almost intact.

Arch of Gavi, Porta Borsari, the Roman Theater) and medieval architectural monuments (Castelvecchio, Scaliger Tombs), many Romanesque and Gothic churches, Renaissance palaces, museums, conservatories «Evaristo Felice dall'Abaco», and universities. Tourists can visit so-called House of Juliet, with its balcony and the house of Romeo and Juliet's tomb. Today Verona is an important and dynamic city.
In 2000, Verona was included in the UNESCO World Heritage site.
