THE HISTORY OF NEW YEAR

Слайд 3New Year in Russia is celebrated on January 1, the first

day of the Gregorian Calendar. In earlier times, New Year was celebrated in the month of September. Later, this day was forbidden by Czar Peter, the Great. In 1699, a decree was read about counting of years from Birth of Christ since January 1. Thus, this day was declared as a New Year's day in Russia. Since then, New Year became a family holiday for the people of Russia.

Слайд 4Until 1752, the year in which Britain and her American colonies

switched from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar, New year fell on Christmas day (25 December). In 1752 the official date of the holiday was the 1st of January. The inhabitants of the Kingdom willingly adopted such an innovation, as was the opportunity to extend Christmas holidays.

THE MEANING OF THE HOLIDAY

Слайд 6The meaning of the holiday is that people celebrate the beginning

of the new year. A lot of people start a "new life", promise to give up bad habits, become better, do what they did not have the last year, make wishes at 00:00 a.m. And just get together with the whole family and friends, eat taste dishes, drink a lot of alcohol and just have fun.

Слайд 7In Russia, this holiday is very much loved and awaited. The

whole country is preparing for it for a month. As for Britain, the British celebrate more calmly. Christmas is the main holiday for them.
