Monument to King Albert I is the War Memorial,

Территории провинций Восточная и Западная Фландрия, где происходили эти события, принято называть "Поля Фландрии"; именно здесь разворачивались многие ключевые события сражений Западного фронта. «Поля Фландрии" - перевод английского выражения Flanders Fields, прекрасно знакомого любому англоязычному человеку. Оно вошло в английский язык благодаря знаменитому стихотворению "In Flanders Fields" Джона МакКрея, канадского военного врача, воевавшего на Западном фронте. Стихотворение было написано МакКреем в 1915 г. после похорон его друга, погибшего во Второй битве за Ипрский выступ, и сразу же приобрело огромную популярность.
