According to the purpose of the utterance we distinguish four kinds of sentences.

1) The declarative sentences
A declarative sentences status a fact in the affirmative or negative form. In a declarative sentences the subject precedes the predicate. It is generally pronounced with a falling intonation.

one –member sentences.
A two-member sentences has two members – a subject and a predicate. If one of them is missing it can be easily understood from the context.

Ex. Young Jolyon could not help smiling.

One-member sentences are generally used in description and in emotional speech.
The main part of a one-member sentences is often expressed by an infinitive.

Sample:
After the dance, the children were sitting on the floor in the gymnasium.

sitting [on the floor] [in the gymnasium.]
Answer: The children were sitting.
